Ōtepoti Writers Lab is proud to announce an opportunity for a local writer to carve space and time to focus on writing…

For two weeks* you will have a dedicated writing space in our centrally located office space, a stipend of $2000 to support your time, a $150 accessibility stipend, and access to additional support, such as mentoring or networking opportunities. You may wish to align with events, such as the Dunedin Writers & Readers Festival, New Zealand Young Writers Festival or Dunedin Arts Festival; we’re happy to assist you figure out presentation avenues, if that’s your goal.

We invite writers based anywhere in the Ōtepoti region to apply. You can be at any stage of your career and be writing in any genre. We actively seek and encourage all writers—diverse in age, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, ethnicity, and perspective—to apply.

Please note, this opportunity is for locally based writers, accordingly, there is no accommodation provided. The Ōtepoti region covers a large area, but check with us if you have any queries.

Information and Application Deadlines

Deadlines for 2023 will be announced mid-year.

  • Open! Two weeks full-time (or four weeks part-time).

  • You will receive a $2,000NZD stipend to cover your expenses over the period of the residency. From Monday to Friday during your residency, you will have use of office space with access to wifi and basic kitchen facilities at our centrally located office, in the historic Carnegie Centre, Moray Place, Ōtepoti. You will also have access to our workshop/rehearsal space, if useful to your process, or should you wish to host a small event onsite.

  • You will be required to attend one Ōtepoti Writers Lab session throughout your time with us, and to meet with our team at completion of your residency for a cup of tea and a debrief. That’s it!

  • Before you begin, please be aware that to complete the registration you will need to input a sample of your writing; and any links to your work into the application online form.
